Proverbs 13:12 Dissected & Defined

“Hope (expectation) deferred (postponed) maketh the heart (meditator) sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.”

Daily-Devo Paraphrase

All of us have had the crushing experience of shattered dreams. It is in man’s nature to place our hope in something or someone. Yet it is just as normal for those confident expectations to be postponed by our Lord. When that happens, our heart is sick. This consumes our meditations and becomes all we think about.

The Problem Is Your Hope Is In Something Instead Of Someone

Life is inevitably going to hold disappointments and postponed hopes. Hope is not a wrong thing; in fact, it is very right! But often, hope is placed in a circumstance rather than a Person—Jesus Christ.

Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” The phrase in the Lord literally means to be delighted when you are under the “in”-fluence of the Lord. That is the Hidden Life! When I delight in His life living through me, God’s desires become my desires. My personal desires may never happen, but His desires will always become a reality. When His desires become my desires, I get everything that we (He and I) want.

Allow Yourself To Be Controlled By The Spirit

If we allow our hearts to be controlled by the Spirit we will see our hearts hope for the things that He is sure to deliver—on time, every time, for it is His time! When that desire comes, it will be a tree of life. The word tree is defined by Noah Webster as: “the largest of the vegetable kind.”

What is a vegetable? Get this! It is an organized body destitute of sense and voluntary motion, deriving its nourishment from some other body (Noah Webster, 1828).

We are nothing more than a vegetable—an organized body that is intended to be destitute of sense and motion that gains its sense and life source from some other body (Jesus Christ).

A tree of life then will simply be the largest version of a reproducing, Christ-controlled, fruit-bearing vegetable.
Satan wanted Eve to eat the tree. God wanted her to be the tree — the tree of Life!
