Proverbs 15:18 (Dissected and Defined)

A wrathful (getting even) man stirreth up (instigates) strife (contention for superiority): but he that is slow to anger appeaseth (to pacify) strife.

Daily-Devo Paraphrase

Dissected and defined, this verse means that, “A man who wants to get even instigates contention to gain superiority, but he that is slow to anger pacifies contentions and gets superiority.”

Angry People are Always Right

Very angry people are nearly impossible to pacify. In their eyes, they are always right. They will do whatever it takes to lift themselves up and bring others down. If anyone rises above them, they will go to any extreme to discredit that person’s honor.

However, “…he that is slow to anger [pacifies contentions for superiority].” You could write next to that portion of Scripture, “exercises meekness.” Meekness is the ability for God’s people to negotiate amongst others without causing friction.

The Remedy of an Angry Man

Now please realize that verse 18b is not the remedy for the struggling man of contention in 18a. You don’t bring a man from aggressiveness to passivity by telling him that it will gain him better superiority.

Rather, this angry man needs to learn that the strife in his life is intended by God to cut him like a knife! God wants that man broken. He is willing to humble that man, no matter what. But that man is resisting because to be humbled is to go to the back of the line in life, to take a lower position in the order.

He Must Increase, We Must Descrease

He will refuse that. However, a man that has taken his position in the back of the line has indeed allowed himself to be humbled. His willingness to decrease that He may increase will reduce strife with the others in life’s line.

God is pleased with this personality. He can promote this person. So in his humility this man gets along with man, but he waits on God. It isn’t long before God steps up to the next register over and proclaims, “I can help someone over here” as he turns the sign from closed to open.

Then everyone watches with a smile as the humble man goes from the back of the line to the front of a very short line. Why? Because the last shall be first. That ought to be our RU reputation. Teamwork will make our dreams work. Disseminating the team will disseminate the dreams. Let’s keep our team together and strong!
