Out of the Abundance of the Heart the Mouth Speaketh

Proverbs 6:12 Dissected and Defined

A naughty person, a wicked (evil in principle or practice) man, walketh with a froward (perverse) mouth.

Daily Devo Paraphrase

Before a man acts bad, you can be sure he talks bad. When he both talks and walks he is a spokesman in both word and deed. He has become a walkie/talkie!

Our Walk is Determined by Our Talk

Solomon is teaching us that our walk is determined by our talk. The person he describes is corrupt and wicked. His wicked corruption is in principle (what’s established in the mind) and in practice (what is customary in action). Also this person speaks perversely.

Perverse speech can be anything from stubborn words or deceptive lies. Where does this stubborn and deceptive speech come from? It comes from our negative, pessimistic, critical, fault finding, blame-shifting hearts.

Out of the Abundance of the Heart the Mouth Speaketh

We are told that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh (Luke 6:45)! Here is a profound thought. Whenever you ponder in your heart on a negative word, you are going to pronounce negative words. Therefore when you pronounce negative words, you will practice negative works.

These negative thoughts come from a negative mind. That is what he means when he says wicked (or evil in principle). Principles are established standards of the mind.  The data you process and put away in the brain will be the feeder of your meditator.

Protecting Our Path From Perverse Speech

So we see our perverse words are sandwiched between prompted principles and practiced works. So, we conclude that in order to protect our path we must proclaim positive promptings that come from a proper perspective which is procured when we permeate our prompter with a proper perception of people and  problems.

Now that’s a good practice. I promise!
