Letter from the Editors – January 2014

Dear Readers,

Happy New Year!  It is with great enthusiasm that we look forward to what God is going to do through the ministry of Reformers Unanimous in 2014. As we prepare for another year to serve Him, we are reminded of the importance of preparing our heart. Proverbs 16:1, “The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD.”

It is imperative that we consider Psalm 19:14 when referring to the preparation of our hearts. Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” Why would Psalm 19:14 present a connection between the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts?  It is because our words reveal our hearts.  God says in Matthew 12:34b, “…out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” The things we say, and how we say them, expose the condition and attitudes of our hearts.

Bro. Steve Curington reminded us continually of this very issue:

“Before you ever did it, you thunk it!”

“Every sin has its origin in our heart.”

“Protect your meditator!”

Steve knew the importance of preparing the heart, as it is where our thoughts originate.

Throughout His Word, God gives us many admonitions about our thoughts. In I Peter 1:13, He instructs us to “gird up the loins of our mind”. Dissected and defined, this means that we need to surround, furnish, and equip the inward parts of our thoughts.  Philippians 4:8 goes into detail about what we should think on, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

This issue of the Victorious Life Messenger is centered on the preparations of the heart.  You will read articles from Dr. Paul Kingsbury, Dr. George Crabb, Ryan Jiles, Benji Smith, and us, as well as a special article from Pastor Dan Outler.  Pastor Outler is our Music Pastor at North Love Baptist Church and is also the SS teacher who brought Steve the Bible as he lay in hospital after his near fatal accident many years ago.

We trust that these articles will help you as you prepare your heart for all God has in store for you in 2014!

Sincerely,

Ben and Wendy Burks
