As the weeping Prophet, Jeremiah, proclaims, “Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city”, my heart is stirred as I see women of all ages deceived continually by the devious activities of Satan. One such occurrence is regarding the subject of beauty.
Whether looking in the mirror, observing billboards along the highway, watching television shows or commercials, or simply standing in the line at the grocery store, the devil has emphatically and strategically planned to get our focus on our outward appearance…and we have allowed him to succeed!
However, when one studies the word beauty in the Bible, a different perspective is found. You will discover that God is not really impressed with our emphasis of outward beauty or appearance. In fact, He makes mention of it several times in the Bible, and usually the person with it is shattered by pride or destruction:
Such was the story of Absalom:
2 Samuel 14:25, “But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.”
To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look on.”
As well as the strange woman in Proverbs who used her beauty to get her way:
Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.”
God even says that outward beauty is vain, which means empty or useless:
Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain…”
there is a kind of beauty is God is VERY PLEASED with, and He mentions it in several verses:
1 Chronicles 16:29, “Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. 2 Chronicles 20:21, “And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.”
Psalm 29:2, “Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.”
Psalm 96:9, “O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.
The word beauty basically comes from a word which means a particular grace, feature, or decoration. The word holiness comes from a word which means sacred consecration or dedication. In other words, to worship the Lord with the beauty of holiness means to be consecrated unto Him….fully dedicated in a sacred fashion for His glory and His good.
Romans 12:1-2, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
Contrary to the lie that Satan has used to keep women in bondage for centuries, this is where our focus should be. This is what God finds beautiful; what He would choose to place on His magazine cover; what takes His breath away – a woman who is set-apart for Him, wholly dedicated to His will. As Amy Carmichael once asked, “Who would go so far as even to wish to be dead to the world and its applause, to all the customs, fashions, laws…”
Let’s stop allowing Satan to scam us with his tactics. Though God isn’t that impressed with outward beauty, He does give great honor to those with real, authentic beauty:
Proverbs 31:30, “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.”
