“Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practice wicked works with men that work iniquity; and let me not eat of their dainties.” (Psalm 141:4)
Wow! What an incredible verse for those of us who work with the addicted or who realize the constant need of walking in the Spirit desiring not to fulfill the flesh. I see three keys in every recovery taught in this one verse. In fact, it is the three things we often mention in the RU Recovery Program more than any other principles.
“Incline not my heart to any evil thing.” This matter of right living begins in the heart. If we can keep the heart holy, the rest will be holy. We can dress up the outside to be extremely impressive, but if the inside (the heart) is polluted, we will be polluted.
Matthew 15:19, “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies”.
“Practice wicked works with men that work iniquity.” The Psalm 1 motto hinges on walking with those who love the Lord, helping you serve the Lord; or those who do not love the Lord hindering you from serving the Lord. We must be diligent to practice personal separation if we would be holy in our lives. This means we must not sit, stand, or walk with the ungodly. Brother Curington said it often – “No bad friends!”
“Let me not eat of their dainties.” This speaks of the triggers that grab your meditations and lead you to temptations. “Dainties” refers to choice foods that lure men and women into foolish decisions. The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life are attracted to that which solicits us to do wrong. Temptation always comes to us in the most alluring way. Sin never shows its true ugliness and character when it is soliciting us. Do not be deceived.
Today’s blog is intended to motivate you to be consecrated to the Lord. Separate from those who do not love the Lord, particularly before they draw you away. Then learn to recognize the triggers that lead to temptations and cause iniquity in your heart. Remember also, that iniquity can and will take root if you allow it to and it will visit your children and your children’s children for generations to come. Break the chain today! No bad friends!
Take my life, and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise.
Take my hands, and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love;
Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee,
Swift and beautiful for Thee.
Take my love; my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure-store.
Take myself, and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee,
Ever, only, all for Thee.
