How Can I Fear?

2 Timothy 1:6-10, “Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.  (7)  For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.  (8)  Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;  (9)  Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,  (10)  But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel”.

What a joy it is to assist local churches in starting a recovery program!  Often, I can sense fear from church members who are going to labor in the Reformers Recovery Ministry simply by the questions they ask (and their countenances) during training. Fear is always a possibility when you are setting out to do something that involves considerable risk.  Risk, after all, means there is no guarantee of success.  But as for us believers, friends, we are more than conquerors when we are walking after the spirit, instead of after the flesh…or fear!

Fear is a fruit not a root.  The root system from which fear springs is that of unbelief in the heart.  When you have unbelief in your hearts, it can only be directed at one of two things. First, it is unbelief in the promises of God; and secondly, is unbelief in you.  Your unwillingness to believe that God is who He says He is, and will do what He says He will do.

Let me remind you…you can’t do it!  That’s right, I said “can’t”. You cannot muster up the courage, fortitude, strength, or anything else that will glorify God.   When you refuse to step out in faith (walking in the spirit) you are saying to God: “You are not trustworthy. Therefore, if I am faced with a situation that depends on You to come through, I won’t take a risk.” However,  HE CAN DO IT through you!

I love what Bro. Curington often said and is written in his books in multiple places – “If you do not ever want to be uncomfortable, then why did God give you a Comforter?”  It is a needy hour for Christians everywhere to respond in faith instead of fear!  Below is a list of questions that may present fear or faith in your life.  Which will you act on today?

1. Do you attend church regularly and respond in faith to invitations God speaks to you concerning (Faith) or do you make excuses to why you don’t need to respond to invitations (Fear)?

2. Do you faithfully tell others about the Lord – soulwinning (Faith) or are you ashamed or fearful to draw in spiritual questions that lead to the gospel (Fear)?

3.  Do you faithfully tithe to your local church, give offerings, and give to others when prompted of the Holy Spirit (Faith) or do you make excuses of the income you do receive and choose to manage it out of fear (Fear)?

4. If you social network, do you share your faith regularly (Faith) or is your page not much different than a lost person (fear)?

5. Is your prayer life one that boldly makes request based on the promises of God (Faith) or do you timidly shy away from prayer not taking full advantage of its privileges (Fear)?

6. Who do you prefer as more important in your life on a daily bases, others (Faith) or you (Fear)?

How Can I Fear…with Jesus?

When shadows fall and the night covers all
There are things that my eyes cannot see.
I never fear, for the Saviour is near.
My LORD abides with me!

How can I fear? Jesus is near!
He ever watches over me!
Worries all cease; He gives me peace.
How can I fear with Jesus?

When I’m alone and I face the unknown
And I fear what the future may be,
I can depend on the strength of my Friend!
He walks along with me.

How can I fear? Jesus is near!
He ever watches over me!
Worries all cease; He gives me peace.
How can I fear with Jesus?

Jesus is King! He controls everything!
He is with me each night and each day.
I trust my soul to the Saviour’s control;
He drives all fear away!

How can I fear? Jesus is near!
He ever watches over me!
Worries all cease; He gives me peace.
How can I fear with Jesus?
