Luke 10:25-29, “And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live. But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbor?”
We should all be familiar with the story of the Good Samaritan. In this story, a lawyer asked what he must do to inherit the kingdom of God. Christ clearly gives him the answer, though actually, it was the desire of the lawyer to prove Christ to be wrong. Instead, Christ teaches the lawyer truth in this story.
Within the last year, Wendy and I had a living will written. This will described what would happen to our inheritance. Can I tell you that there is nothing my children will have to “do” to get my inheritance! They do not “do” anything for the inheritance; they are simply the recipient of it.
In the story of the Good Samaritan, after the lawyer asked this important question, Christ answered him with another question, “What does the law say?” The man responded in verse 27, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.” It is the next verse in this story that really deserves attention: “And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.” If this lawyer or anyone else could keep those two commandments perfectly, they absolutely could go to Heaven but that is impossible! Not only because of the sin placed on them from Adam, but because all men are sinners!
Friend, what are you doing today to justify yourself? To make you think that you “fit in” or to give you a sense of entitlement? No man can be justified by doing anything! No man can be justified by obedience! We must be justified by grace through faith!
If you are still trying to figure out a way into Heaven, there is no other way than through Jesus. He said, “I am the Door.” He did not come to show a door, He said, “I am the Door.” He did not come to tell of a way, He said, “I am the way.” He did not come to give a truth, He said, “I am the Truth.” He said if any man be found written in the book, they will have entrance into Heaven. What book? The Book of Life! Notice it said in the book. We must be in Him.
