Proverbs 24:3-4 Dissected & Defined
Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding (knowledge applied) it is established: And by knowledge (information gained) shall the chambers (inner rooms) be filled with all precious and pleasant (comfortable) riches.
Instruction, Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom
Early in our proverbs series of Daily-Devos, we explained the difference between the four key words of proverbs — instruction, knowledge, understanding, and wisdom.
In this chapter, we are introduced to how three of these develop a quality home. The home is not a house; but rather, the individuals make a house a home.
To build a house and fill it with nice things only takes money. Furniture, fixtures, wall covers, and such are nice, but those things do not make a home. A nice house it may be, but building a home takes wisdom.
As a matter of fact, it only takes knowledge (information gained) to fill your house and its inner rooms (chambers) with things of value that provide comfort. The more you know, the better your chances of acquiring the world’s convenient goods. But, knowledge will not build or establish a house into a home. It also takes understanding.
Understanding (knowledge applied) is one step beyond knowledge. You gain the information, apply what you have learned to your life, and establish your home. Establish is to erect. Those who apply what they have learned in life erect a home. Those who don’t apply what they have learned will acquire possessions from their learning, but they will never erect anything with what they have learned. Yet, there is one more step to building a house into a home.
You fill it with your knowledge, you erect it with your understanding, but you build it with your wisdom. Wisdom is “skill in living.” The more in life that you understand, the more skills you acquire. That is how a person obtains wisdom in an area of life. This is what it takes to build a house into a home. The literal meaning of the word build here is “to mature or to develop.” It is referring to the development and maturing of children.
