Proverbs 25:2 Dissected & Defined
“It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.”
Dissected & Defined
Glory means to bring the right opinion. It literally means, to make someone look good. Conceal is to keep close or secret. Honour is a position of exaltation. King in today’s vernacular would be a person in leadership.
This verse explains the roles of God and His God ordained authority.
Solomon had a unique way of getting to the bottom of the truth. In 1 Kings 3, Solomon was faced with two harlots arguing over a baby. But who was the rightful mother? In the beginning of this chapter, we see Solomon praying to God for wisdom in his personal and professional life as a leader. By the end of the chapter he is faced with a dilemma. He uses the God-granted wisdom to determine the real mother and the chapter concludes with this statement: “all Israel feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.”
Judgment is to determine what is right and to then act upon it. Solomon wanted wisdom so that he could respond properly to life’s situations. If a leader is to exercise judgment, he must be able to make those judgments on truth. To do this, he must search out a matter.
Our responsibility as God ordained authority
As a leader, whether at home or at work, we all share in this responsibility. So it is our honorable position as a leader to find the truth in a situation and to act on it.
Some of the best advice I have ever received was from my pastor. Here is one: “Get the facts, then react!” God holds all the facts. God knows the Truth. He is the father of Truth. God will grant it or conceal it, but it is our responsibility as leaders to search for it.
If God conceals the Truth, it is for His glory. It is to make Him look good. But if He reveals the Truth, His God ordained authority will look good…if we do the right thing with that Truth. Then this will make Him look good.
So in your search, make sure you get… “just the facts”… then react!
