Wisdom on Gold, Silver and the Fruit Hidden Within

Proverbs 8:19 (Dissected and Defined)

My (Wisdom’s) fruit (outcome) is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue (profits) than choice silver.

Daily-Devo Paraphrase

Wisdom & The Holy Spirit

As pointed out in previous proverbs, I believe that the use of the word “wisdom” is synonymous with the “Holy Spirit” of today. Therefore, whenever I see the word “wisdom” in proverbs, I substitute it with the “Holy Spirit.” For the Spirit we learn is our wisdom (I Cor. 1:30). Our verse teaches the outcome of the Spirit (living through me) is better than fine gold! And the profit of the Holy Spirit (living through me) produces better than choice silver!

If the fruit of the Spirit is better than great wealth, then what, pray tell, is this fruit? It is listed in Galatians 5. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, meekness, faith and temperance.

The Outcome of Wisdom

Fruit means “outcome.” Thus, the outcome or result of the Spirit in our life is the power to respond in one of nine actions or reactions to every difficult circumstance in life. Thus, we can conclude that these proper actions and reactions to difficult circumstances are more valuable to us than gold and the profit of these proper responses are of more value than silver.

One disappointing observation of mankind is our insatiable interest in financial profit. Many of us will do crazy things to gain financial position. We’ll take on side jobs to bring more in, we will cut coupons. We shop for bargains. We cut down the out flow and make risky investments to multiply our money.

Humans are enthralled with raising their net worth. Yet, according to this verse, yielding the Hidden Life is more valuable than all of that! But when was the last time we put this much effort and made an investment in the Treasure within us?

I can’t help but wonder if we gave our walk as much investment as our work we would find ourselves quite rewarded.

Within us is a greater Treasure. We know where it’s at, but it remains Hidden; for He is our Hidden Treasure.

Steve Curington grew up in a Christian home and graduated from North Love Christian School in 1984. After high school, Steve started a 10-year addiction to alcoholism and cocaine. After a serious car accident, Steve found complete sobriety through his relationship with Jesus Christ. After his recovery in 1996, Steve began Reformers Unanimous, a faith-based addiction ministry. What started as a humble, Friday night addiction class with four regular attendees in Rockford, Illinois, grew to a class of more than 300 people from the community and then spread to other churches across the country and around the world. The founder of Reformers Unanimous International (RU) died suddenly on October 30, 2010. Mr. Curington, a husband and father of five children, was only 45, but he accomplished more in his 15 years of ministry than many do in a lifetime. We know his work, his writing, his voice, and his reach will live on.
