Overcoming Your Wrong Thinking

“Our wrong thoughts hurt God’s heart. If we truly believed this, we would think differently.”

Have you talked to God this morning? God desires to speak to you! Have you heard from Him today? If you have not an answer, it may be that something is prohibiting your two-way communication. Do you know what it is? Remember, wrong thinking is the interference of the enemy that he uses to scramble our frequency of communication from the Great Commander.

Yes…it could be that stinkin’ thinkin’! But where did it come from? And how did it begin?? One of the primary ways the devil will seek to advance upon us is through temptation. If his tactic of temptation is successful, we will be faced with an onslaught of turmoil that will likely interrupt our peace and overwhelm our meditations. My friends, Jesus clearly tells us that He does not want this to occur. Let us take a look at a portion of Scripture that demonstrates this truth.

John 14:25-27

“These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with youmy peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Wrong Thinking replaced by the Holy Spirit

We see here that one of the Comforter’s – the Holy Spirit’s – primary jobs is to bring things to our remembrance. It must be noted, however, that if the Spirit is to bring something to our remembrance, it must first have been something that we previously had known. In other words, we cannot remember something that has never been a part of our memory!

Knowing this, it is clear that God intends for us to prepare for turmoil by spending quality time in His Word and committing the knowledge therein to memory. When we do this, God promises us, the Comforter will enable us to remain at peace in the midst of difficult circumstances and not fall victim to temptation and its resulting turmoil.

The Battle is for the Mind

The Bible tells us in Ephesians 4:27 to “neither give place to the devil.” You see, when we allow ourselves to keep wrong thoughts in our hearts, we will inevitably surrender precious real estate to the devil, and he will use this to try to destroy us. We are in a battle with Satan. Battles are almost always fought to gain territory. The phrase Paul uses to annunciate this forfeiture is to give place. The word place is the old English translation of the Greek word topos, which literally means topography or territory.

Do you understand how this truly hurts God’s heart? To think that we would give up valuable real estate – the territory of our hearts – to the one whom ultimately hurt God’s heart! Do not be deceived, dear friend. You may not even realize that he is staking his ground. It is important to realize that the devil may not build anything on the territory we render him right away. Oh no, the Angel of Light is more cunning than that. He knows that if he moves too quickly, he will alarm us to the fact he is constructing strongholds in our lives. More often than not, the devil will patiently wait until we have allowed him to reside within our minds—the conceded territory—for a period of time so that he may silently construct infrastructure in our thought processes that he will later use to devour us.

Guard your Mind from Wrong Thinking

So we see that it is absolutely imperative that we are diligent on our guard and not allow the enemy to capture any territory in our minds. Guard your hearts against wrong thinking, my friends. There is an enemy who desperately desires to capture it!

In Christ, you must abide if you desire the right King to reside…but do not chuckle at this chide, or think wrong thoughts you can hide…for Satan is patiently waiting to misguide, so your heart’s territory he can divide!

Sharing is Caring

Steve Curington grew up in a Christian home and graduated from North Love Christian School in 1984. After high school, Steve started a 10-year addiction to alcoholism and cocaine. After a serious car accident, Steve found complete sobriety through his relationship with Jesus Christ. After his recovery in 1996, Steve began Reformers Unanimous, a faith-based addiction ministry. What started as a humble, Friday night addiction class with four regular attendees in Rockford, Illinois, grew to a class of more than 300 people from the community and then spread to other churches across the country and around the world. The founder of Reformers Unanimous International (RU) died suddenly on October 30, 2010. Mr. Curington, a husband and father of five children, was only 45, but he accomplished more in his 15 years of ministry than many do in a lifetime. We know his work, his writing, his voice, and his reach will live on.
